Bravery Walks in Packs, Herds, and ClansHandicapped since birth, Earth Shadow lives in the shadow of Sunrise, his stronger twin brother. Now they are finally old enough to leave his clan’s winter shelter and join the healthy adults on the Walk Around, the annual migration of the healthy members of his clan as they follow the herds of Bison Antiquus, the giant bison that travel the plains.
As they travel, Earth Shadow gathers stones for tools and weapons and learns the ancient lore of his people. At the Great Gathering, he must meet new people and help strengthen ties among the clans. Finally, he must bring down a massive and dangerous bison in a hunt. If he survives, he will finally step out of his brother’s shadow and become a leader in his clan. If he fails, he will spend his life hidden away with the old, the babies, and the infirm in the Circle of Mountains. Set some ten thousand years ago in the American Southwest, this meticulously researched story based on archaeological evidence is a coming-of-age story that will resonate with modern middle grade readers. |
Where the Story Takes Place
The people depicted in In the Shadow of Sunrise are now called the Folsom Culture. They lived in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains of North America about 9,000 years ago. Based on the distribution of types of stones used to make projectile points, archaeologists were able to determine that these people traveled widely.
In the Shadow of Sunrise begins in the Circle of Mountains, an area now known as the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado. They travel to an area now outside of Colorado Springs, where there is a large petrified forest, then down to and area in Northwest Texas now known as Alibates before going west, to Blackwater Draw, near Clovis, New Mexico and to White Sands. On their way back home, they pass Capulin Peak, an extinct volcano, in Northeast New Mexico that is close to the Folsom site, where the first evidence of this culture was discovered a little over a century ago.
